Holy Land ‘Exploited’
The Holy Land brought alive the Old Testament rather than the New Testament, the Rev. K. O. Bathurst told members of the Canterbury Women’s Club. “The places reminiscent of Jesus Christ were overlaid by buildings used as tourist attractions,” he said, according to a report from the meeting. The most real place for him, from the life of Jesus, was the Sea of Galilee, where Jesus was baptised. Sacred places in Jerusalem were over-commercialised and
it was almost impossible to explore anywhere without being pestered by guides. Mr and Mrs Bathurst also visited Israel, Hong Kong, Europe, Canada and the United States.
