Prefects Form Guard
Sacred Heart College prefects in uniform formed a guard of honour for the presentation of 31 debutantes to the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) at the Sacred Heart College Past Pupils’ Association’s debutante ball last night Massed bowls of flowers in the college colours (red and white), potted trees and plants and hanging baskets with replicas of the college crest provided the setting.
The debutantes carried posies, a gift of the association, given to them before the ball by the sister superior of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions at the convent earlier in the evening. The debutantes, trained by Mrs W. Wilson,' are: Cheryle Anderson, Jennifer Ball, Barbara Bohan (Leeston),
Adrienne Brook, Marie Buiman, Denise Cavanagh (Nelson), Elaine Clark, Lynne Davis, Elizabeth Dobbs, Patricia Fisher, Patricia Fitzgibbon (Cheviot), Mary Heffernan (Tapanui), Beth Inglis (Nelson), Kathleen Kavanagh, Christine Keppel, Colleen Lobb, Laraine Martin, Colleen Molloy, Therese McQuinn (Hokitika), Lynne Noldus, Patricia Purcell, Kathleen Renwick, Patricia Rollinson (Ashburton), Prudence Silcock (Nelson), Patricia Snee, Elizabeth Thorn (Nelson), Margaret Trerise, Irene Verrail, Pamela Watson, Suzanne Wilson, Kerry Young. The guests, who were received by the president of the Sacred Heart College Past Pupils’ Association (Mrs M. R. Carter) included: the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr
G. Manning) and Mrs Manning, the Right Rev. Monsignor J. Finerty, the Right Rev. Monsignor T. Liddy, the rector of the Holy Name Seminary (the Rev. G. McGinty, S.J.), the Very Rev. J. Cunneen, Brother M. B. Scanlan, principal of St Thomas of Canterbury College, and priests of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and the surrounding parishes. Representatives of former pupils of St. Mary’s Convent, Villa Maria College, Dominican College, St. Margaret’s College, Te Wai Pounamu College, St. Bede’s College, St Kevin’s College, St. Thomas's College, Xavier College, and the Sacre Coeur alumnae and the Sacred Heart College Parent Teacher Association also attended.
Mrs Carter wore a gown st delphinium blue patterned brocade, with a fitting bodice, a straight skirt and an inverted pleat in the back. The vice-president Mrs L. A. Watson, chose a gown of embossed midnight blue brocade which featured an empire line and a floating panel. Miss C. O’Gorman' chore a gown of turquoise l-rex brocade in a Princess line style with elbow length sleeves.
