No Changes Made In Anzac Day Services

The pattern of Anzac Day services in Christchurch next Tuesday will follow that of previous years—a dawn service followed in mid-morning by the citizens’ service. The dawn service, arranged by the Australian Imperial Forces’ Association, will be held at 6.30 a.m. at the Citizens’ War Memorial in the grounds of Christchurch Cathedral. Veterans will assemble at 6 a.m. and parade to the memorial.

The president of the Australian Imperial Forces’ Association (Mr S. J. Bromhead) will deliver the Anzac dedication and the vice-pre-sident of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association (Mr J. Allan, a former commanding officer of the Canterbury division of the R.N.Z.N.V.R. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) will represent the Government and Mr M. Coultas, the Australian Trade Commissioner in the South Island, Will represent the Australian Government. Also present will be the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), city councillors and local members of Parliament.

The services will be represented by the commander of the Southern Military District (Brigadier W. R. K. Morrison), the commanding officer of the Canterbury division of the R.N.Z.N.V.R. (Commander R. E. Sanderson) and the air officer commanding training group (Air Commodore D. F. St. George). The Anzac parade will assemble in Worcester street,

near the Avon Theatre, at 10.15 a.m„ and will march to the war memorial for the inter-denominational service and wreath-laying ceremony. Churchmen taking part will include the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt), the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby), the chairman of the Methodist North Canterbury district (the Rev. H. C. Matthews), the Moderator of the Christchurch Presbytery (the Rev. A. Baxter) and the president of the Associated Churches of Christ (the Rev. R. A. Blampied).

Seven members of the Pad-dington-Woolahra branch of the New South Wales Returned Servicemen’s League will also take part. The Christchurch R.SA. has distributed 81,800 poppies for sale in the greater Christchurch area.
