TORTOISES DYING
Aboard Ship For 11 Days (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) LONDON, April 19. Animal rescuers fought yesterday to save the lives of 6150 tortoises which arrived in London crammed on top of one another in baskets. So far at least 50 have died and officials could make no estimate of the final toll.
They arrived aboard the Dutch vessel Sandenburgh after an 11-day voyage on its unsheltered decks. Officials of the R.S.P.C.A. handling the rescue at the society’s animal hostel in London said that they believed the tortoises had not been fed or watered since they left Casablanca.
The officials did not at first know who imported them, but they were later claimed by a Birmingham pet shop. The importer blamed slow handling at the London docks for the deaths.
