BRISBANE, April 19.
Health authorities in Brisbane are investigating a spread of arsenic over the suburb of Inkenba after a break-down at a Brisbane riverside ammonia plant.
The state member for the area, Mr J. Melloy, yesterday called for a full investigation into the incident He believed that two tons of arsenical solution had been flushed into the Brisbane river, and that much of the ammonia plant and its surrounds had been contaminated.
The state deputy director of health, Dr. D. W. Johnson, said last night that the arsenic-bearing solution had been disseminated from the
plant of the Ammonia Company of Queensland, Pty., Ltd., last Friday.
He said that since then Health Department officers had been making constant checks of the area and had found arsenic traces of up to 12.8 parts of arsenic per million.
A spokesman for the company . declined to comment yesterday, except to say that he thought some repents on the leakage of the arsenic were exaggerated.
