No Restitution

Shopkeepers should note the refusal of a Wellington magistrate to order restitution of £557 obtained by a man who last year cashed worthless cheques in 10 New Zealand cities and towns, including Christchurch. Unemployed, aged 28, the man was later arrested in Sydney and convicted there on 16 charges of false pretences. “It would be quite unrealistic for me to “ make an order for restitution ”, said Mr J. A. Wicks, S.M., to the prisoner. “ If shops were gullible enough “to take your cheques, they can make their own “remedies without any help from me”. Although the “ early warning ” system introduced by retailers in Christchurch and elsewhere several years ago has heavily reduced the incidence of repeated offences in the same district, the skilled offender can still “beat the system”. The old rule, “never cash a cheque for a stranger”, deserves more attention, and admits fewer exceptions, in today’s tighter trading conditions.
