‘Best Service’

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 19.

The Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) tonight asserted, in an Invercargill address, that the best service the Government could offer to New Zealanders at present was to deal with economic problems, firmly, fairly, and effectively—and this would be done.

He told the Associated Chambers of Commerce that this was his answer to pressures for a change of policy and an easing in Government action—the inevitable result of two by-elections in which “a movement away from the Government was apparent.” Mr Muldoon said his answer might produce temporary political unpopularity,

“but in the long run our people are fair-minded, and I am confident they will see that the Government’s actions were soundly based.” “For the sake of New Zealand we cannot allow an electoral reverse to divert us from a course of action designed to overcome the country’s most difficult economic problems since World War II,” said Mr Muldoon.
