Petone Held By Labour Party
Zealand PrtM Association) WELLINGTON, April 16. Labour held the Petone seat with an increased majority at Saturday’s by-election. The successful candidate, Mr F. Colman, polled 6858 for a majority of 3076 over Dr. R. M. Martin (National) 3780, and Mr C. Whitmill (Social Credit) 1792.
The by-election was caused by the death of the former Labour Minister of Railways, Mr M. Moohan. The new member Is a 42vearold former officer of the Boilermakers’ Union, who has in recent years been assistant secretary of the Labour Party. He is married with three daughters and lives at Wainuionuta. National’s vote in Petone Zeil by 1400. Labour’s vote was substantially the same. Social Credit got the same support. Dr. Martin is an Eastbourne general practitioner, and Mr Whitmill ■is an accountant
Mr Colman said he was thrilled to have increased the majority of a seat held by one so popular as Mr Moohan.
Dr. Martin would make no comment
