Pirate Radios Responsible ?

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

LONDON, April 16.

The Labour Government is investigating the possibility that “pirate” radio stations had illegally intervened in the local elections which swept the Labour Party out of power in London and other areas this week, United Press International reported.

The Government has been seeking ways to close the offshore broadcasters, but so far without success. The stations are believed to favour the Conservative Party, which tended to leave them alone when it was in power,

The Postmaster-General, Mr Edward Short, said on Friday that legal aspects of allegedly pro-Conservative broadcasts would be investigated over the week-end. Nationwide, unofficial tallies in 38 counties gave the Conservatives 705 seats, a gain of 199, to Labour 558 seats, a loss of 188. During the campaign, one of the pirates, Radio London, said 98 per cent of Conservatives favoured “free radio," compared with 20 per cent of Socialists. It urged its listeners to make sure that their candidate reflected their view on “free radio.”
