SMUGGLING OF DRUGS
Rome Court To Visit U.S. (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ROME, April 16. The American Government has given permission for a Rome court to visit the United States and question defendants in a vast trans-Atlantic drug-running case, legal sources said in Rome. The Mafia is alleged to have organised the smuggling of heroin worth more than 15,000 million lire from Italy into the United States between 1951 and 1960. Of 32 accused, 10 are in custody in Italy—including two alleged ringleaders—five are reported in France, 12 in the United States and the rest are at large. A letter granting permission from the United States Government would be read at the next hearing of the Court, the sources said.
