One of toe great surprises of Argentina is that in one of toe remote southern regions of Patagonia it is still possible to hear Welsh spoken as a native language. It is a tribute to toe determination of a small band of pioneers a century ago to keep their national identity to a strange land where everyone else spoke Spanish. On May 28, 1865, a group of 153 settlers left Wales in a sailing ship—one of toe famous old tea clippers—to seek a new life in South America. It took them two months to get there. When they landed on toe bleak Patagonian coast, near toe mouth of toe Chubut river, caves were at first their only shelter. For years the colonists faced a bitter struggle for their existence.
