An Auckland Family
The Turners of Huia. By Allan Kirk and Harvey Turner. With Foreword by Lady Freyberg. Institute Printing and Publishing Society. 123 pp.
This story of an Auckland family has its beginnings in a secluded and charming locality called Little Huia on the northern shores of the Manukau Harbour. It was here that Edward and Maude Turner made their home in the early nineties. By 1900 they had raised a family of seven boys, two more being born after the turn of the century. Boyish escapades and the excitement of growing up in the bush settlement near Huia Bay provide the book's main theme and perhaps the most memorable episode it recalls is the fire which destroyed the Turners’ home in 1895.
From their isolated Huia surroundings the Turners later moved into Auckland and established the firm which bears their name: Turners and Growers, Ltd. Its simple narration of the hardships and joys of pioneering life is bound to give this book a wide appeal. It is well illustrated with some attractive coloured plates.
