Tussock Calves Bring Best Prices At Coalgate
Best quality Aberdeen Angus and Aberdeen Angus cross steer calves were a little easier on Addington rates at the annual Coalgate calf sale yesterday. Hereford steer calves, however, met a good sale.
There was a yarding of 660 calves, comprising 445 steers, and 215 heifers. This was an increase of 105 on last year.
The ealves came forward in good order, the top pens carrying a lot of condition. Buyers, however, appeared to show more preference for the tussock-bred calves from the back-country properties. For the size of the sale, there was a good selection of Hereford cattle, and they met a steady inquiry. Compared with last year, values were from £4 to £6 lower. -Whereas steer calves sold to £34 last year, yesterday’s best price was £25 15s, while the top heifer calf price was £23 compared with £32 last year. Most of the offering was absorbed by local and downcountry districts, two lots going to Hawarden, and others to the Oxford area. The sale began with a pen of IS Aberdeen Angus steer calves realising £25 15s, and this remained the top steer calf price. They were offered by B. D. Richards (Horonata), who sold another pen of IS at £22. F. D. Belt, of Glentunnel, sold 22 Aberdeen Angus-Hereford Hereford cross calves at £23 IDs, and A. P. H. Scott (Coalgate) sold a small lot at £23. Top price for other breeds was £24 for 11 Hereford and Shorthorn steer calves from Bayfields Estate (Bakala Gorge). A. D. H. Scott sold 12 Herefords at £23 15s, and a second pen of 12 at £22. Coleridge Downs, which last year topped the Hereford section with a pen at £3O, again had a good, although lower sale, with 18 Herefords at £23 10s and another 19 at £23. A range of steer calf values
