MR E. J. C. HAY

Mr Edward John Cruikshank Hay, superintendent of police in Christchurch in 1959-60, died in Christchurch yesterday. He was 66. Born in Scotland in 1900, Mr Hay arrived in New Zealand in 1921 and joined the Police in Christchurch in 1922. He was first posted to Greymouth where he spent 13 years. clerk in Nelson and was appointed a sergeant in Christchurch in 1939, later serving in Timaru. In 1946 he was appointed a senior-sergeant in South Dunedin and in 1952 returned to Christchurch u a subinspector. In 1956 he became an inspector at Police Headquarters, Wellington, before being transferred back to Christchurch as chief inspector. Mr Hay was appointed chief superintendent of the Christchurch district in March, 1959, and retired in December, 1960. He was one of the last West Coast mounted constables.

Secretary of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society from 1961-65, he was also a keen bowler and Highland piper. He was a former president of the Highland Pipers’ Society of Canterbury and judged many local and national contests. He was a founder of the Pibroch Society in Dunedin and Christchurch. Mr Hay was a Justice of the Peace, and a vice-president of the Canterbury Justices’ Association. He was a past master of Mawhera Lodge, Greymouth, and Southern Star Lodge, Christchurch, and a past officer of the Grand Lodge of New Zealand. His brother was also a policeman, and in 1964 retired as superintendent of a North Island district

Mr J. H. Blackwell (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 13. Mr Joseph Henry Blackwell, a former director and chairman of the Kaiapoi Woollen Co., has died in Auckland. He was aged 96. Mr Blackwell, who took part in a wide range of cultural and civic affairs in North Canterbury, was an initiator of the North Canterbury Freezing Co., in 1916. He was a director of the company for 40 years and chairman for 25. He was Mayor of Kaiapoi, from 1906 to 1911 and from 1915 to 1923. He was a foundation member of the Canterbury Progress League and chairman at the Waimakariri River Trust
