Australian Pennies
Sir,—ln the vestibule of the Sydenham Post Office is a typewritten notice strongly deprecating the use of Australian pennies in the adjacent stamp-vending machine. I read in "The Press” a few weeks ago of the arrival of a large consignment of these former Australian pennies at Auckland to relieve an acute shortage of our pennies in that region. If this is so, it is to be hoped that not many of these doubtful coins reach the main street of Sydenham. —Yours, etc., W. WALKER.
April 4, 1967. [The Director-General of the Post Office, Wellington (Mr G. Searle), replies: "The notice was placed beside the machine by the Postmaster because it had been pointed out to him by members of the public that sometimes Australian pennies do not activate the mechanism. An examination of the machine has disclosed that in the majority of cases an Australian penny will operate the machine satisfactorily, but sometimes more pressure is needed as Australian coins are a little thicker and larger in diameter than the New Zealand penny. The notice has now been removed.”]
