Fon Expected To Win Hawke’s Bay Cup

"The Press” Special Service

HASTINGS.

Although Elkayel is the only five-year-old to win the Hawke’s Bay Cup during the last 27 years, Fon is expected to improve the record of this age group when he contests the £2500 race to be run over 11 furlongs at Hastings on Saturday.

Foni one of the best horses developed in the Central Districts for some seasons has won the Woodville Cup, Napier Park Leopard Cup and the Feilding Goodbehere Handicap at his last three attempts.

Under a lower weight scale he comes into the Hawke’s Bay Cup with 8-7, which is the same as his winning weight in the Goodbehere Handicap.

Fon is a member of the team trained at Hastings by C. Cameron, who has produced 15 winners this season. Fon has won four times and has earned £4245. If he wins tomorrows cup, his share of the stake money will be £1625, which will take his seasons winnings to close to the £6OOO mark.

Empyreus, Dalvui, Mixed Reception, Castle Dee, Lucky Rebel, Raidan and Sparkling Maid appear to constitute the main threat to Fon, and they are powerful opposition. The issue in the Havelock Flying Handicap, second leg of tomorrow’s T.A.B. double does not appear to be as confusing as that in the cup. Form runners are Prince Hagen and Yoshiko, which won at the Manawatu meeting, Floodlit, which ran a brilliant gallop on Tuesday to prove his fitness could beat them, especially with 7-9. Wavering, Scramble and Royal Chase are likely improvers, and of them Wavering may do best. Selections:—
