CAPPING WEEK
Preparations Under Way Hundreds of students in Christchurch are already making preparations for events of capping week apart from the graduation ceremonies of the University of Canterbury and of Lincoln College. The traditional aim is to have as much fun as possible while raising funds for a selected charity—this year the Emotionally Disturbed Children’s Society. Major events will be:— Friday, April 28: The students’ revue “Clownin’ Around” which will continue until May 6. Saturday, April 29: Collections in New Brighton accompanied by the usual haka party “charity chanters,” and others. Several stunts are planned. Sunday, April 30: Graduation service in the Cathedral.
Monday, May 1: Capping magazine sales all day and some endurance stunts.
Tuesday, May 2: The “Avon bike race,” a Miss University contest, and stunts almost all day.
Wednesday, May 3: Capping procession of about 60 floats in the morning and collections all day. Thursday, May 4: Canterbury graduation ceremony with ball in the evening. Friday, May 5: Lincoln College graduation ceremony. Students’ stunts this year will be on a bigger scale than ever before. Though seemingly spontaneous, they take as much planning as any other item in the programme and require the permission of civic authorities.
