Course On Waste Water Treatment

A special course for waste-water and water treatment operators from throughout New Zealand began in Christchurch on Tuesday.

The alm of the course is to stimulate interest and encourage operators to increase their knowledge of water and waste water treatment processes to attain a higher standard of plant operation. The course is under the supervision of the chief public health engineer of the Ministry of Works (Mr D. A. Ferrier).

He said that the department had introduced a training and certification scheme for sewage treatment plant operators nine years ago. Since then 300 operators had attended courses at Trentham.

The present course in Christchurch is the first to be conducted in the South Island.

Mr Ferrier said the courses helped plant operators to ensure that treatment facilities received proper and competent operation, provided incentives for suitable men to take up plant operation as a career, and provided opportunities for advancement of operators according to qualification and experience. The primary concern was to ensure that where adequate sewage treatment facilities were provided effluents could be disposed of so that no nuisance was created and without detriment to other legitimate uses of the receiving water. This could be achieved by setting standards, providing treatment works and proper and diligent operation of these works.
