MAGISTRATES COURT Disqualified Driver Was Taking Girl To Hospital

A disqualified driver who was taking hi* sick girl friend to hospital after she had taken some sleeping tablet*, on April 10, was convicted and fined £3O and disqualified from driving for a further year. He was appearing in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Mr P. L. Molineaux S.M, was on the bench. The driver, Wayne Edward Black, aged 17, a labourer, said he was by himself at the time when his girl friend became ill and he had to get her to hospital as soon as possible. Detective Sergeant A. B. Dalzell said that on investigation, it was found the girl had been rushed to hospital. Black (who was not represented), pleaded guilty. STOLE RINGS A teen-age girl, whose name was suppressed, was remanded on bail to April 19, on five charges of theft of rings, to a total value of £276 2s 6d from four Christchurch jewellers. She pleaded guilty to all charges and was represented by Mr R. S. D. Twyneham. Mr Twyneham in asking for interim suppression of his client’s name, said she had a background of mental upset and had received mental treatment. HARBOURED ESCAPER Warren James O’Connor, aged 17, a timber stacker, was remanded on bail to April 19 for sentence when he was convicted on a charge of harbouring an escaper from the Child Welfare home in Ferry road between March 13 and 16. O’Connor (Mr G. R. Lascelles) pleaded not guilty. THEFT AND ASSAULT Gary Michael Warren, aged 18, * bricklayer’s apprentice, was charged with theft of 8s and assaulting a youth, A. A Dearden. He was convicted and remanded to April 14 for sentence on each charge. Detective P. V. White said Warren was one of a party of youths who were at Thompson Park, New Brighton on March 11 and that he admitted tripping Dearden and asking him for some money to pay for beer. Warren (Mr R. L. Kerr), pleaded guilty to the charge of assault and not guilty to the theft charge. He said he thought he was entitled to the Ss for the beer as he had placed some beer in Dearden's car and did not want him to “have it for nothing.*’ THEFT OF HAM A youth, who, while cleaning a room at J. C. Hutton's (N.Z) Ltd. factory on April 11. noticed a ham and then hid it in a pile of tyres, was convicted and fined si*. The youth, Colin Robert Wickenden, aged 28, a workman, said he later took the ham from the pile of tyre* and was going take it home as he was huncsy and be had no food at hoaie. He pleaded guilty. Detective Sergeant Dalzell sai* the defendant was apprehenfed as be was going out of the factory. The ham was valuerf at a 4s sd.
