NEW AWARD MADE

First For Oyster Workers Permanent senior workers who open more than 840 dozen oysters a week, and permanent learners who open 420 dozen, during ordinary working hours, will qualify for a bonus of 4d a dozen under the Canterbury Wholesale Oyster Workers’ Award—the first award made for this type of work.

Any oysters rejected for size or any other reason, e.g., mutilation, spawning or discolouration, will not be counted. The bonus will be paid for all oysters opened in excess of the maximum figure but for overtime or casual work, the bonus will be calculated on all oysters opened. Under the award, ordinary hours of work will be 40 hours a week and eight a day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and workers will work from Monday to Friday, inclusive. The minimum wage for permanent oyster openers will be £l4 a week, and for learners until capable of opening 50 oysters an hour, £7 a week. For casual openers the hourly rate will be 7s 9id. The minimum rate for all male workers under the award, other than oyster openers, will be £l5 Ils 8d a week. Females will receive the following minimum wages:— For the first three months, £7 19s a week; for the second three months, £8 10s a week; for the third three months, £9 2s 6d a week; for the fourth three months, £lO a week; thereafter, £lO Us. Experience will be counted from entry into any oyster-opening establishment.
