War In Brief
Developments in the war in Vietnam recorded by N.Z.P.A.Reuter include: SAIGON. Fifteen Viet Cong hiding submerged in a river and breathing through hollow reeds were killed yesterday by the fire of a platoon of United States troops. The Viet Cong were among the fleeing remnants of a unit earlier badly mauled by United States infantry. United States aircraft also kept the pressure on the Viet Cong unit, which lost 274 dead. American casualties in the action were reported to be one killed and 25 wounded.
OTTAWA. Canada’s External Affairs Minister, Mr Paul Martin, yesterday proposed a progressive reapplication of the 1954 Geneva cease-fire terms in Vietnam as a preliminary to direct discussions between the United States and North Vietnam. Under the terms of the 1954 Geneva Agreements ending the eight-year Indo-China war, the French Union forces and Communist Viet Minh agreed to disengage and withdraw to either side of the 17th parallel in Vietnam. The country was to be reunited after 1956 elections, which never materialised. SAIGON. Viet Cong guerrillas launched a 20-minute mortar attack on the United States Marine air base at Chu Lai before dawn yesterday, killing 1 Marine, wounding 37 others and damaging some Warplanes, military spokesmen said.
