STAR STUDY BY GERMAN

Year At Mount John Mr Ulrich Kohler, of the Remeis Observatory, Germany, has arrived at the Mount John University Observatory, South Canterbury, where he will spend 12 months. During his stay in New Zealand Mr Kohler will work mainly on the joint programme established between the Remeis Observatory and the Mount John Observatory. This programme Is concerned with the photographic study of selected regions in the southern sky for the study of variable stars—stars whose light is not constant. Mr Kohler was born in Wattenscheid, Germany, in 1939. He obtained his B.Sc in physics at Hamburg in 1961 and his M.Sc in physics at Erlaungen in 1966. His master’s thesis was concerned with investigations into interstellar reddening In the constellations of Cygnus and Orion by photoelectric observations using six narrow-band metal interference filters. Since then Mr Kohler has worked at the Remeis Observatory on the study of variable stars using the iris-diaphragm photometer to derive light curves and periods for these stars. He was also in charge of the erection of the new mounting for the 40in Cassegrain telescope at the Remeis Observatory.
