GENERAL NEWS

Quorum The Canterbury School Commitees’ Association usually has 40 or more delegates at its meetings. Last evening (the last meeting before committee elections on Monday), there were only 14, and 15 were needed for a quorum. Help was close at hand. A Canterbury Education Board officer, also a committee member, was back in his office nearby. He was called to make the required number and retired “after a suitable interval”—in fact, after minutes had been read. Weather Improves After an overcast morning with patches of drizzle, the weather in Christchurch yesterday became partly cloudy and mild. A light north-east wind kept temperatures below 60 degrees. A maximum temperature of 59 degrees was recorded at Harewood at 1 p.m. At Harewood at 6 a.m. the temperature was 50 degrees. By 9 a.m. it was 53 degrees, and by noon 58 degrees. By mid-afternoon the temperature had begun to drop, and at Harewood at 3 p.m. it was 58 degrees. At the Botanic Gardens at the same time it was 57 degrees.

Sharks Seen Policemen in a plane being used during a search at Spencerville yesterday saw two large sharks heading toward the beach near the North Beach Surf Life-saving Club. The sighting was reported by radio to the Central police station, and the surf club was advised in case there were swimmers in the area. Trout Stamp A stamp to commemorate the centennial of the introduction of brown trout to New Zealand will be issued at the end of August by the Post Office. The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was advised of this last evening. Cleaners’ Edict The New Zealand Cleaners’ and Caretakers* Union has instructed its members not to use electrical appliances, particularly “wet” scrubbers, which do not have isolating transformers. Informed of this last evening the Canterbury School Committees’ Association said most schools had electric dry polishers, but scrubbers might be hired for floor washing in vacations. The association agreed to comply with the electrical regulation quoted by the union.
