PROBLEM AT LYNDON

No Facilities For Crowds Problems at Lake Lyndon, visited by more than 1000 persons on winter Sundays, were referred to by Cr. R. M. D. Johnson at a meeting of the Malvern County Council yesterday. He said that the old Tawera County Council had been frightened for years at the possibility of a serious accident at Lake Lyndon, which lies over Porters Pass on the West Coast road. To see if an improvement could be made, the council had recently called a meeting with the Ministry of Works, the Lands and Survey Department, the Automobile Association, the South Island Publicity Association, the Tourist Department, and the Transport Department, he said. “We can’t get anybody to take action if the road should be closed because it is dangerous,” said Cr. Johnson, explaining that while a snowfall could in effect dose the road, it could not legally he closed without due notice. The Ministry of Works was trying to arrange for a telephone at the lake and the Lands Department was preparing a plan for lavatories, with which the Tawera council had agreed to help financially. • Cr. Johnson was asked to continue negotiations on behalf of Malvern, with which Tawera has been amalgamatI ed.
