Detector In Gaol

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 10. An electronic metal detector, capable of picking up very small objects, has been installed in the Auckland gaol to screen inmates. The first to be used in a New Zealand gaol, it is set into a doorway leading to the recreational hall and visiting area. Before passing through the doorway, the men are told to remove all metal objects, including belt buckles.

The Prison Superintendent, Mr E. G. Buckley, said today: “It is just like an ordinary doorway —you step up and walk through. If the detector picks up metal, it sounds a buzzer.” The equipment had proved very effective, although no Illegal metal object had been found on inmates. Visitors are not screened by the detector.
