Course In Fine Order For Freyberg Play

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN.

If there is no more rain by tomorrow, the St. Clair golf course will be in peak condition for the opening rounds of the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament.

Rain during the last few days has given the course quite a liberal soaking and has been of real benefit.

Full shots to the greens are holding extremely well and the fairways are in immaculate condition.

The excellent state of the course was reflected in the scoring on Sunday when all players had at least one practice round, with many playing close to or just under par figures. S. G. Jones (Hawke’s Bay), the New Zealand amateur champion, was most impressive with rounds of 70 and 69 on the par 72, 6361 yd course. Rated by many as the country’s top amateur player, R. C. Murray (Otago) also looked to be near his best in the afternoon.

The clash of these two players in the first round may

well produce one of the tightest matches of the tournament.

Another good card was returned by C. A. Cowie, (Otago), who shot five birdies in his round of 69.

But the highlight of the day was the hole-in-one by G. Lummis, the top player for Buller-Westland-Nelson Marlborough. Lummis holed out with an eight iron at the 164 yd fourteenth, a par-3 hole.
