Electric Power To Spare

By-product steam from the sulphuric acid plant'of Kempthorne Prosser will be used at a pressure of 4301 b per square inch and temperature of 400 degrees C. to generate electric power in the 3250 kw English Electric turboalternator. Power produced will be sufficient to run the entire Fertiliser Works and, at full production, will have a surplus which will be sold to the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board under an agreement reached with the board in June, 1966. Electricity will be gener-

ated at 11,000 volts, the surplus passing direct to the power board’s high voltage system, while the portion used by the works itself will be reduced to 400 volts by transformers located at various parts of the works. Low pressure steam is required for the process but even this steam is first used to produce some electric power. All the steam raised Is admitted to the turbine and processed steam is withdrawn at lower pressures from two points along the turbine.
