HAULAGE DISPUTE
U.S. Govt. To Mediate (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 10. Government mediators planned to intervene today in a dispute between road haulage firms and the Teamsters’ Union that has shut down 65 per cent of the industry. The move was announced last night by a Government mediation service spokesman. The industry claims that all its members are supporting the shut-down, called on Saturday night in protest against a series of local strikes by Teamsters’ Union members. The union is demanding pay increases for 450,000 employees of about 12,000 firms.
Less Austerity.—Britain is likely to get a mild easing of its economic austerity programme in Tuesday’s annual Budget—with the promise of better times ahead. This was the consensus of financial experts, backed by evidence from Government documents recently released.—London, April 10.
