Barbadoes Street Cemetery

Sir,—ln regard to burials in the Barbadoes street cemetery, the earliest I know of is that of William Cone on June 7,1852. Mr Cone was killed by a fall from a horse near the old Ferry and an inquest, the first, I understand, to have ever been held in Christchurch, was held at the Heathcote Arms on June 5 before Mr Donald, the Coroner, and 13 jurymen. The account of this can be read in the “Lyttelton Times” June 5 and 12,1852. Could anybody tell me if there is any plans of the early graves in the cemetery?—Yours, etc, GREAT-GRANDSON.

April 5, 1967. [The Town Clerk (Mr C. S. Bowie) replies: “According to City Council records (inherited from the Church Property Trustees) the first interment in Barbadoes Street Cemetery was ‘Brown,’ no date entered, probably early April, 1851. The second interment was that of Henry Nippref, a labourer, of Christchurch, who was buried on April 9, 1851. Mr William Cone was the twentieth interment in the cemetery. The council has some plans of the Anglican portion of the cemetery, but there are no plans of the west, or other than the Anglican portion.”]
