SABAH POLL
Heavy Defeat (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) JESSELTON (Sabhah), April 9. The Chief Minister of Sabah, Mr Peter Lo, plunged to a heavy defeat in Jesselton last night on the opening day of polling in his State’s first direct General Election. Two of his fellow-Cabinet Ministers, Dato Mohammed Yassin, Minister of Social Welfare, and the Minister for Natural Resources, Mr Thomas Jayasuriya, were also rejected by yesterday’s polls. Mr Lo, candidate of the Sabah Chinese Association—the Chinese wing of the ruling Sabah Alliance Party—polled less than half the votes gained by his victorious Independent opponent, Mr Yap Pak Leong —1219 votes compared with 2715—in the Elopura constituency.
A soft-spoken lawyer with a reputation as a skilled administrator, Mr Lo took over as head of the Sabah Government more than a year ago from Dato Donald Stephens, who resigned after differences with the Federal Government.
