Mixed Reception Wins At Awapuni

(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. Mixed Reception finished strongly from several places back on the home turn to win the Manawatu Autumn Handicap narrowly but w&M on the second day of the Manawatu Racing Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. The Bulls mare, trained by W. L. Aitken and ridden by H. N. Rauhihd, beat Sir Barton and Tarim in the first leg of the T.A.B. double. Prince Hagen completed the double by winning the Ascot Handicap decisively from Kintyre and Alkira. The feature race, the Awapuni Gold Cup, resulted in a win for Terrific, which, after sharing the pace with Jay Ay, drove clear at the furlong, then lasted to hold a spirited challenge from Empyreus in the dying stages. The Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes went to the day’s hottest favourite, Mannix, from High Delight. Mannix had appeared beaten at the home turn, but he unwound a fighting challenge when High DeHght passed him in the straight, and came again to win by three-quarters of a length.
