Four W. Indians In Pollock’s‘World Xl'
/ (N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) LONDON. The West Indies, with four players, has the biggest representation in a “wprld eleven” chosen by South African P. M. Pollock for the annual edition of the “Cricketer” magazine.
Australia is represented by the test captain, R. B. Simpson, and his opening partner, W. M. Lawry. Pollock’s XI, in batting order, is: Lawry (Aust), E. J. Barlow (S. Africa), Hanif Mohammed (Pak.), G. S. Sobers (W. Indies), captain, R. G. Pollock (S. Africa), T. W. Graveney, Simpson (Aust), J. T. Murray (Eng.), wicketkeeper, W. W. Hall (W. Indies), C. C. Griffith (W. Indies), L. S. Gibbs (W. Indies). Twelfth man, K. C. Bland (S. Africa). Pollock said he did not believe Simpson was suited to the role of opening batsman. “He is susceptible both to sheer pace and to movement early on.” Simpson would be more use in this side at No. 7 where he could also concentrate on his leg-spin bowling, at which he was under-rated. Hanif was preferred to
Rohan Kanhal (West Indies) at No. 3 because he was sounder if an early wicket fell, Pollock said. Graveney was selected at No. 6 because he was England’s best batsman and the best in the world on a bad pitch, he said. For his wicket-keeper, Pollock looked no further than Murray whom he described as a complete artist with the gloves. If an extra seam bowler was needed in place of a batsman he would select Ken Higgs of England.
