Plough Parade At Malvern Show

A display of old ploughs and tractors was the highlight of the sixty-first Malvern Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show at Sheffield on Saturday, including the Golden Plough for competition at the World Ploughing Championships in Canterbury in May.

The show attracted record entries in the horse (1050), sheep, grain and seed sections. The grain entry was described by the judge as the largest he had ever seen at a show.

The gate was £209, and the ever-all profits were estimated to be higher than last year. Heavy rain the previous evening made the ring heavy and several of the tracks around it were liquid mud. However, with the clearance of the rain, conditions for the show were mild and pleasant.

The grand parade was led by the St. Andrew's College Highland Pipe Band and was attended by the patron of the association, Mr R. S. Gunn, who was present at the first show 61 years ago. This was followed by the plough and tractor parade. Held by the Sheffield Young Farmers’ Club to mark the twenty-first anniversary of its inception, the parade included the Golden Plough for the world championships and the Silver Plough for the New Zealand ploughing championships. Included in the parade was a single-furrow plough thought to be more than 120 years old. It was one of the first ploughs to be used in Canterbury. Another single - furrow plough had been used to win a ploughing competition in 1874. Great interest was aroused by a team of four Clydesdale horses, the last such team in Malvern County, pulling a plough. There was also a collection of old swamp ploughs. The final display event in the ring was given by the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Brigade, who put out a burning shed. The feature event of the day's show jumping, the F.E.L competition for A and C grade horses, developed into a race against time between Ladakh, ridden by Miss M. Allin, and Fiano, ridden by D. A. Vnnngman. Three clear rounds in the first jump off from a field of 15 left Ladakh, Fiano and Lucky Strike, ridden by Miss R. Grimsey, to jump a shortened and higher course.

Lucky Strike clipped a bar and incurred four jumping faults on a raised post and rail fence. Fiano and Ladakh both had clear rounds. In the second jump off, against the clock, Ladakh jumped a clear round in 28 seconds. Fiano, moving very fast between jumps and tightening the corners, also jumped a dear round, and a second faster than Ladakh.

Competitors in all the jumping events experienced difficulty with the slippery ground, which created awkward situations for riders and horses, particularly between the combination double.

The judge of the led horses, foals and cobs (Mr D. C. McArthur) said that there was a good, even selection in most classes and that some of the foals showed particular promise. The top yearling and two-year-olds, exhibited by Miss B. M. Jenkins and G. A. Gray, were very good, he said. There was not a great deal of difference between the champion cob, Mrs L. Bush’s Prince Robin, and the reserve cham--6 ion, Miss S. Saunders’s Mr Ed, ut the champion had slightly better conformation, he said. Sheep numbers penned for the show were well up on last year's total, and the judges were impressed by the quality of the top animals. Mr H. Small, of Ashburton, the Border Leicester judge, said his classes were well filled, and the overall standard had been very high, particularly in the wool.

Although some of the Southdowns were showing the effects of the previous night’s rain, the judge, Mr N. J. Early, of Mayfield, was particularly impressed by the quality of the two champion animals which he described as long sheep, free of fat, and with good rear quarters. Mount Torlesse Station’s champion Merino ewe was described as a fine sheep with a very even fleece —the most even of the three finewool breeds, by the judge, Mr K. V. Hood, of Rakaia. The adult sheep were considered to be a little overdone and too fat by the fat sheep judge, Mr M. S. Henry, of Christchurch.

“The fat lambs came forward very well, and for this time of year the over-all standard was very good.” The grain and seed competitions were described by the judge, Mr J. Rankin, of Christchurch, as the bigegst he had ever seen at a show. He said there were some excellent samples of wheat and that Wright Brothers entry of Triple Dirk was outstanding. T. E. Jenkins entry in the Hilgendorf wheat section had been a beautiful sample of wheat. “The standard was very good in ail sections, and it was hard to distinguish between the entries when trying to award places.” Mr L. Galloway, of Christ, church, the judge tn the wool

section, said the place-getters in both finewool classes were well up to the best show standard, which was particularly creditable as this was the first year Malvern had had a wool competition. Crossbred wools had been a little disappointing and lacked crimp, but the champion fleece, a finewool hogget, entered by G. D. Gillanders and Sons, was outstanding for style and weight. Faulkner Brothers* halfbred ewe fleece was outstanding for softness and handling. The number of entries in the cattle section was smaller than in previous years. No cattle were exhibited in the Hereford or Friesian sections, and there were only two entries in the classes for any beef breeds. There was a large entry of home produce and homecrafts, while a large area of the show ground was given over to a display of agricultural machinery. A competition to guess the combined live weight of a pen of three sheep attracted a large number of entrants. The winner, Mr D. H. Townshend, was only one pound from the official weight of 2681 b. Champions were:—
