Anniversary Celebrated

The St. Paul’s branches of the Mothers’ Union celebrated their seventy-fifth anniversary by holding a thanksgiving service and social evening on Thursday. About 120 attended.

The service was conducted by the vicar of St Paul’s, Papanui (Canon R. O. Williams) assisted by the Rev. Ross Allen. Archdeacon H. M. Cocks, a former vicar, preached the sermon and Deaconess J. Henderson read the lesson. After the service an anniversary social was held in the church hall, where a musical programme was presented in a Victorian stage setting. Items were given by Mrs H. I. Nicholle (vocal solos), Mrs W. E. Scarf and Mr Keith Gledhill (pianoforte duets) and Canon R. P. Andrews (vocal solos). Telegrams and letters of congratulation were read, including one from Mrs Kate Corby, of Kaikohe, who was secretary of the branch for 25 years from 1914 and is now 98. A thanksgiving gift of a lectern Bible was presented to the vicar for the church by the two enrolling members of the branches, Mesdames E. B. Campbell and I. G. Gregor.
