PROPOSE TRUCE

Birthday Of Buddha (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright! WASHINGTON, April 8. The State Department said today the United States supported a proposal by South Vietnam to Hanoi for a 24hour truce in the war on May 23, the birthday of Buddha. “This is an Important Buddhist holiday and we agree that there should be a cease-fire for its observance, as there was in the case of Christmas, the New Year and Tet (the Asian New Year),” the department said. A spokesman said the truce, if agreed to by Hanoi, would include a pause in the American bombing of North Vietnam but if the truce period were used by the North Vietnamese or Viet Cong to build up supplies the bombing would begin again.

Leaders of both the moderate and militant wings of South Vietnam’s fragmented Buddhist movement appealed last month for a halt in the fighting on Buddha’s birthday, the Associated Press reported.
