JUDGE CRITICISES CROSS-BREEDING
Mr M. S. Turton, of Ashburton Forks, who has retired from show judging, is highly critical of some present-day cross-breeding trends. After completing the judging of flne-woolled flock sheep at Oxford Show last week, he said that the standard of Corriedale sheep had shown marked improvement, but Romneys had gone the other way.
A commercial Romney man himself, Mr Turton said some breeders had concentrated on a short, blocky sheep which
was strong in the wooL Now, in the North Island, in an attempt to improve their class of sheep, farmers were Introducing Border Leicester, and English Leicesters.
If breeders had concentrated on improving the Romney: within the breed, they would | have been better off. Corrie-; dale breeders had "won out” ; because they had “stuck to a standard.” They now faced a J situation where demand for their sheep exceeded supply,: but Romney men who had maintained a high standard were still meeting good sales.,
