AINTREE EVENT

National Run Today

(N.Z.P.A.-Reutcr—Copyright) LIVERPOOL. More than 50 million television viewers in North America and Europe will today share a track-side seat at the Grand National, the world’s toughest and most famous steeplechase. Live pictures of the race will be relayed across the Atlantic by satellite, and will also be carried by Eurovision, It may be the last time the race is run on the historic Alntree course.

Mrs M. Topham, owner of Aintree, seeks to sell the course for property development because of rising costs.

But the Lancashire County Council hopes to acquire the course and continue racing on the turf which has seen many outstanding races in the past 139 years.

More than 40 horses will tackle the famous 30 fences over the unique course of four miles and 856 yards.

Conditions of entry have been tightened and the jumps altered in recent years, but the winner must always have luck on his side and there have been many freak results down the years.
