FOR YOUNG READERS
Strange and frightening happenings in a quiet Welsh valley are the theme of Viola Bayley’s WELSH ADVENTURE (Dent, 160 pp.), and Jeannie and her friend Serena find much to puzzle over when they spend a working holiday at Craigwen House, a guesthouse owned by Serena’s charitable Aunt Georgie. Readers in the 10-15-year-old age group will find this a gripping story. It is yet another of Miss Mayley’s popular “Adventure” series, and the btock-and-wtote drawtags are by Mania Lane Foster.
What boy does not enjoy a train book? FREDDY THE FELL ENGINE, by Peter Walsh (Oxford University Press, 24 pp.), is chiefly a picture-book—bright splashy pen-and-wash illustrations by the talented Papas and a brief brisk text by Peter Walsh. As in a lot of other train stories.
tire httie train's place to taken by a faster Diesel Engine. Freddy is left to rust on the bill. But he begins a new life
wtren he becomes the main attraction in a children’s playground. For children of all ages, and their parents.
One good thing to come from the Walt Disney version of "Wtantothe-Pooh” to a eat of small books for the underfives. There are six books in the series, of which the first is POOH’S BOOK (Ndaon, 28 pp.). Each contains two stories from the original work, trid in simplified language and lavishly illustrated. Good for reading aloud.
For rider children who enjoy a quiet browse, there is plenty of material in MISCELLANY THREE, edited by Edward Bitehen (Oxford University Press, 204 pp.). Some of it, admittedly, will have tittle appeal for a New Zealander; brass-rubbing in old churches is not a likely hobby here. But apart from that, there are stories, poems and articles to suit every taste, with line drawings and colour plates by several well-known illustrators.
