SHORT STORIES

The Cow That Fainted. By C. A. Cullen. Blockwood and Janet Paul. 90 pp. This slim volume contains 24 stories, some merely very brief sketches about animals which Mr Cullen has known and observed during his many years' farming in New Zealand. It is clear that the author has a keen eye for both the beauties of the natural world and the peculiarities of some of its inhabitants. For those animals which become household pets he shows a liking which never degenerates into sticky sentimentality. All the stories are told clearly and plainly and for the most part in good English although there are occasionally some unaccountable lapses in grammar. Many of the stories are very amusing, some are almost incredible (yet are vouched for so simply and sincerely by the author one cannot disbelieve) and all are interesting. There is nothing in the least deep or profound in this book but the simply-told stories will interest anybody who has a liking for animals.
