U.S. Navy Visits On Battle Jubilee

WELLINGTON, April 7.

The United States Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral D. L. McDonald, and four ships of the United States Pacific Fleet will visit New Zealand in May to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced tonight that Admiral McDonald and his wife would arrive in Christchurch by air on May

15. They will visit Wellington and Auckland, departing for the United States on May 19.

The frigate U.S.S. Gridley will visit Lyttelton from May 15-17, the destroyer Maddox will visit Wellington from May 15-21, and the Gridley from May 17-21. The destroyers U.S.S. Turner Joy and U.S.S. McKean will visit Auckland from May 17-21.

The battle of the Coral Sea was fought by combined Australian and American naval forces from May 4 to 8, 1942 and is credited with halting the Japanese advance in the Pacific during the Second World War.

The 35-man United States Navy Pacific Fleet Band and 25-man fleet Marine Force Pacific Drum and Bugle Corps will also visit New Zealand, performing at Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
