PRESIDENT OF POLAND
Meeting With Pope Likely
(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)
ROME, April 6. The President of Poland, Mr Edward Ochab, will arrive in Rome today for a State visit which is expected to include the first meeting between a Polish Communist Head of State and the Pope. No official announcement has yet been made of an audience with Pope Paul, though Vatican sources say it is most likely.
It is virtually unheard of flor a foreign Head of State to visit Rome without seeing the Pope, and the Soviet President, Mr Nikolai Podgorny, upheld the tradition during his visit earlier this year. The meeting would come at a time when the Roman Catholic Church and the Polish State are showing signs of willingness to bury the hatchet after years of crisis and tension.
