Poll Wording Discussed

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, April 7. Government members of Parliament ended a two - day caucus tonight after discussing and assessing the work ahead when the new session of Parliament opens on April 26. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said at a press conference tonight that members discussed the whole economic position and ways of overcoming present difficulties. Asked if the caucus discussed the question of in-

direct taxation, ■■ the Prime Minister replied that everything, including indirect taxation, was discussed.

During the two-day meeting the wording of ballot papers for this year’s liquor hours referendum and six bills to be introduced during the coming session were considered.

Discussion on the liquor hours poll and the wording of ballot papers took up most of this morning. Mr Holyoake said that much of the discussion centred on whether tea breaks should be included in any extensions of hotel drinking hours. No date could be fixed for the poll as legislation would probably have to go before a Select Committee of Parliament.

Asked to comment on suggestions that a poll could be held during early November, or in June, Mr Holyoake said: “I think it is generally accepted that you don’t get a good turn-out for any poll in the winter. I would not think it would be possible to get major legislation through the House by mid-winter.”
