RETIREMENT PROBLEMS
60 Listen To Address
“It is not possible to dissociate health in retirement from health in earlier life,” said Dr. H. R. Donald in an address to more than 60 persons on “Preparation for Retirement.” “Pride in one’s work is the basis of physical and mental health. Contented employment is life’s greatest boon. Anyone approaching retirement must seek and find alternative interests.”
He said the two “big bad wolves” of old age were loneliness and boredom. “Loneliness need not be of their own making—friends have passed on while the faculties are failing. The answer is the residential home. “What we advocated for our dogs can’t be too bad for ourselves,” said Dr. Donald. “We would be better for cold baths, more exercise, and one good meal a day rather than several small meals.”
