France has taken an important step towards making a hydrogen bomb with an announcement- in Paris yesterday that a French isotope separation plant has started producing uranium enriched to more than 90 per cent The Ministry for Scientific Affairs said the factory at Pierrelatte, southern France, had been producing the high-ly-enriched uranium since March 29. France is said to be awaiting only sufficient production of such uranium before she can start constructing her first thermonuclear bomb, due to be tested near Tahiti in the South Pacific some time next year.
