Milk Board Insists On Canopies

The Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board will insist that all vehicles used to deliver bottled milk are fitted with regulation canopies.

The board was told yesterday that a recent survey conducted by its inspector (Mr J. S. Swaney) revealed that only 19 of 85 vehicles inspected fully complied with the regulations and .the board’s by-law requirements. Mr Swaney said that 63 vehicles had canopies which required some attention, and three others did not 'conform at all to the canopy regulations. Under existing legislation all vehicles used for carrying bottled milk, unlesq specifically exempted, should be provided with standard permanent canopies. Mr' Swaney said the vehicles used without regulation canopies were owned by two wholesale companies which delivered some bottled milk. He recommended that let-

ters be sent to the companies concerned. Commenting on the general condition of* vendors’ trucks, the chairman of the board (Mr W. E. Olds) said that some required extensive repairs. Others were in very dilapidated condition. “It is in the interests of the vendors to keep them in good order,” he said. “We can’t do much so long as they are clean.”

Mr G. A. Franks said there was no excuse for anyone not having a canopy on his truck. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr. L. F. Jepson) was asked to find out what difference the new crates would make to the protection of milk from sunlight. The board agreed that the canopy regulations might be modified if the crates had enclosed sides.
