Mafia-type Criminals
(N.Z. Pres? Assn. —Copyright) CANBERRA, April 2. A special branch to weed out Mafia-type criminals and other undesirables who slip through migrant checks is to be established |n Canberra. The branch will be pari of the Department of Immigration 1 and will work closely with the Commonwealth police force. It will greatly strengthen the existing check ■* bn migrants. Which recently,has been ahpwn not to be fully effective. A spokesman for the Department of immigration said recently that the “Special Reports Branch” would be under the direct contror of the . Secretary of the Department. It will ‘have a full-time director and two investigation officers.
Planning of the branch has been under way for about a year. It was given added urgency by revelations about “Mafia-style” activities ip Melbourne late last year. Last January the Victorian Chief Commissioner of Police, Mr R. Arnold, criticised the existing migrant screening system after a trip he made to Italy.
