Segundo’s Sire Was Unwanted

“The Press” Special Servlet INVERCARGILL. When the English-bred horse, Wedgewood, a ton of the English Derby winner, Bolt Roussell, was brought to Southland in 1959 by Mr C. Dynes to do study duty in the Wyndham district, he was ignored by Southland breeders.

In his sole season In Southland, Wedgewood served only one mare, Supermarine, which is owned by M,r J. C. Cook, a neighbour of Mr Dynes.

The result of that mating was Segundo, which won the £3OOO George Adams Handicap and was beaten a nose in the Great Autumn Handicap at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter carnival. In his two appearances at Riccarton Segundo won £2500, being the top winner for the meeting. Segundo, which won as a hack hurdler in his first appearance in this role, has been developed into a grand stayer by the Invercargill trainer, R. E. Humphries. Humphries has bad his problems in producing Segundo at his peak for autumn racing. With restricted training at the Invercargill course, where extensive track improvements have been carried out in recent weeks, much of Segundo’s training was confined to road work until Humphries took him to Riverton before the Birchwood meeting.

As Segundo has proved himself adept on heavy tracks, there will be opportunities to place him to advantage during the winter, and particularly when he concentrates more seriously on the jumping side. Supermarine, the dam of Segundo, proved herself a capable race mare when trained at Invercargill by J. A. Rowland. She is a half sister by Lo Zingaro to Blackmount Belle the dam of The Greatest, which won twice at the Riccarton Easter meeting.
