Leading Bass At Hamburg
(from the London corr««pondent of "The Frets") LONDON, April 3. Noel Mangin, the New Zealand bass who is leading Sadler’s Wells, has signed a contract with the Hamburg Opera Company for three years. He will be one of the company’s leading basses.
"It is very exciting as the Hamburg Opera is the number one house in Germany,” said Mr Mangin. “Among the roles I will be singing are Sarastro, Osmin, Varlam, Rocco, Hagen, Titurel . . . and they are mounting 12 performances of ‘Don Pasquale* for me.” Mr Mangin will also be singing Dr. Bartolo in a colour television production of “The Marriage of Figaro” to be filmed in Hamburg and sung in German. Before he begins work in Hamburg next August he will sing Private Willis in “lolanthe” and Swallow in “Peter Grimes” (with Peter Pears as Grimes) at Sadler's Wells. In June he will sing Osmin in “H Seraglio” with Mattawilda Dobbs as Constance at the Bath Festival. Yehudi Menuhin will be conducting. Then Mr Mangin will fly to South Africa for six performances of Sarastro in ' ‘The Magic Flute”—“and a good holiday.”
