Mixed Success For N.Z. Table Tennis Tourists
(Special Crspdt. N.Z.PA.) CAMBRIDGE, (England). Members of the New Zealand table tennis team had only mixed success in the Cambridge open . tournament which has just concluded, New Zealanders contested the men’s single semi-finals, the men’s doubles semi-finals, the women’s singles final, the women’s doubles final, and the mixed -doubles final, but won only the mixed doubles event
B. A. Foster played well in the men’s singles but was eliminated in the semi-final round by the eventual winner, D. Brown, 21-14, 16-21, 21-16.
Foster, and his partner, T.
J. O’Carroll, were beaten by Brown and T. Venner in the semi-final of the doubles after eliminating their team mates, A. R. Tomlinson and M. L. Dunn, in the quarter-final round.
Mrs N. Trail was out of form in toe final of the women’s singles, losing to Miss E. Sayer 18-2 L 15-21. In toe doubles final, Mrs Traill and Miss C. E. Johnston lost to Misses Sayer and J. Simpson, 19-21, 17-21, 17-21. The mixed doubles final was an all New Zealand affair —Mrs Traill and Foster beat Miss D. L. Wade and H. J. Waterhouse 17-21, 21-13, 2115. The next playing engagement for the team is at Leicester.
