Question Of Polish

DUNEDIN, April 3. A 42-year-old Polish bootmaker appeared, in the dock at the Dunedin Magistrate’s Court today. A Hungarian interpreter, who was in the building, was asked if he would interpret for the accused. “I would be glad to do so,” said the interpreter. “I speak five languages. Unfortunately, none of them Is Polish.” The interpreter suggested seeing If the accused
could understand German, as a possible language known to them both. “Sprechen ale Deutsch?” asked the interpreter. There was no response. The interpreter put the question in another language, but the accused continued to stare blankly about him. In the confusion somebody asked him if he spoke English. “Yes,” he said.
